This system has 3 different points, separated into Administrative, Diplomacy and Military. The game can be played in many different ways, but all of them are dependent on one thing: the new monarch points system. Some countries, however, are higher tier countries, which means that they have much more flavor, which includes decisions, events, missions and ideas than others. The game features the ability to play as anyone in the world, from one of the warring Daiymos of feudal Japan, to the Ottoman Turks, even to the Iroquois of North America. The game is very similar to the previous Europa Universalis 3, but it takes all of the expansions from that game as a baseline for EU4.
Europa Universalis IV uses an improved version of Paradox's Clauswitz engine, and brings in UI improvements from Crusader Kings II. As a sandbox game with no true goal, the player can conduct war, diplomacy, trade, and many other managerial aspects of running a country, though missions and events in the game, if accepted, push players towards strengthening their nation and expanding their rule throughout the world. Like previous games in the series, any nation in the world active during its time frame is playable. The game's time frame is set from 1444 to 1820.

National Monuments II (£0.99) adds new graphical national monuments to the map, ranging from Stonehenge through Tenochtitlan to Himeji Castle, while American Dream adds 50 new events, 10 event pictures, and several new unit models to the United States of America, all seemingly related to the American Revolutionary War. If that’s not enough for you, there are also a pair of new DLC packs available. There are new achievements, some of which should give you incentive to play differently (Sunset Invasion has you play as the Aztecs and conquer Lisbon, Madrid, Paris, London, Amsterdam, and Rome). There are new ideagroups (whatever those are) for loads of nations. There are map modes that display coalitions and opinions. There are buttons that will automatically construct peace offers that the AI will accept, whether you’re surrendering or demanding surrender.
You can now swap to playing as a vassal state when you release them, for instance. Other than the usual balance tweaks and bugfixes, there are a few new features. I realise that I’m one of the few unfortunates like this, though, so I thought you might like to know that Europa Universalis IV has received a hefty patch. I still haven’t played Europa Universalis IV on account of the fact that Europa Universalis II gave me an irrational fear of maps. NO PLEASE I’LL BE GOOD JUST NO MORE MAPS PLEASE
